At Citizen, nothing matters more than the safety and wellbeing of our customers.

When someone is facing domestic abuse, the situation can escalate quickly. Knowing that someone is there to listen, act and stand beside you can make all the difference.

Recently, we supported a customer in Evesham through a frightening and traumatic experience. Thanks to swift action, strong partnership working and a shared commitment to her safety, she and her son are now preparing for a fresh start.

A frightening incident

The customer’s ex-partner came to her home and began causing a disturbance outside, banging on the door and shouting. Inside the property, her young son was terrified.

The situation escalated when the ex-partner, joined by his wife, confronted her at the door. When she opened it to ask them to leave, she was violently assaulted. She was dragged to the ground, kicked and punched, and struck with objects that caused serious injuries.

She required urgent treatment at the Major Injuries Unit at Worcester Royal Hospital. Both offenders were arrested at the scene.

This was an extremely distressing incident for the customer and her child — and one that required immediate, coordinated support.

Acting quickly to protect and support

As soon as we became aware of what had happened, safeguarding procedures were put into motion straight away.

Referrals were made to Social Services’ Family Front Door and to West Mercia Women’s Aid to ensure specialist support was in place.

We liaised closely with CID to support the ongoing investigation and to help ensure the customer’s safety. Practical steps were also taken to help her feel more secure in her home.

Through our Domestic Abuse team, additional safety measures were arranged, including door alarms, window alarms and personal alarms.

Every action was focused on reducing risk and providing reassurance during an incredibly vulnerable time.

Planning a safe new beginning

Given the high level of risk, it was clear that a longer-term solution was needed. The Emergency Transfer policy was discussed and put into action.

Through persistence and close working with colleagues, a suitable property was identified that had just become available.

Because of the urgency and seriousness of the case, the property was reserved to ensure she could move as quickly as possible.

When she received the news, she was overcome with emotion. After everything she had endured, knowing that she and her son would soon have a safe place to call home brought immense relief.

They both moved into the new property before Christmas and are settling in well.

The power of partnership and compassion

This case reflects the dedication of Citizen colleagues and partner agencies who worked together quickly and compassionately to protect a family at significant risk.

Domestic abuse is not just a housing issue. It is a safeguarding issue, a wellbeing issue, and a community issue.

By working closely with specialist services and acting without delay, we can help create pathways to safety and recovery.

Most importantly, it shows that no one has to face abuse alone.
