Working together to tackle fly-tipping

Keeping our neighbourhoods clean and safe matters to all of us
That’s why every day Citizen’s bulk waste team is out across our estates clearing fly-tipping and bulky waste, responding quickly when issues are reported and working hard to stop them happening again.
People like Trevor Brand and Ady Quinn are at the heart of this work. Between them, they have more than 60 years’ experience at Citizen, and they’re part of the team you’ll often see out on estates clearing dumped waste, speaking to customers and helping to keep shared spaces safe.
Last year alone, our bulk waste team dealt with over 10,000 fly-tipping and bulky waste jobs across the Midlands. Often, that means returning to the same neighbourhoods again and again to keep areas clean and welcoming for the people who live there.
You tell us how much it matters to see action taken, and Trevor and Ady see that first-hand when customers come out to thank them while work is underway. While fly-tipping can be frustrating, especially when it happens repeatedly, our teams are determined, experienced and relentless in tackling it.
More than just clearing waste
For Trevor, Ady and the rest of the team, the job is about more than removal. They carefully check what’s been dumped, work closely with neighbourhood officers, and share information with local councils to help identify where waste has come from and prevent repeat problems. This joined-up approach helps us take stronger follow-up action and focus on the areas most affected by fly-tipping.
Strong partnership working in Willenhall
In Willenhall, Coventry, we’re taking things a step further. Trevor and Ady are part of the team supporting a targeted approach with Coventry City Council to tackle fly-tipping in this hotspot area.
Together, we are:
-
Improving bin storage and access for collections
-
Taking a more targeted approach to enforcement
-
Installing new cameras on our land
-
Attending sites alongside council teams to get quicker results for customers
If this approach is successful, we’ll look at how we can roll it out in other neighbourhoods too.
Supporting customers to do the right thing
We know most people take pride in where they live and want to do the right thing. Alongside enforcement and clean-ups, we’re here to support customers to dispose of waste responsibly and avoid fly-tipping in the first place.
