Installing aids and adaptations

If you live with a disability or mobility issue, we may be able to make adjustments in your home that can make you more comfortable and help you move around more easily.

The kind of help we can offer depends on whether you need a minor adaptation or a major adaptation.

Minor adaptations are smaller adjustments to your home, and include things like:

• grab rails in doorways, corridors and bathrooms
• extra handrails on your stairs or external steps
• lever taps in bathrooms and kitchens

We’ll usually cover the cost of installing a minor adaptation.

The best way to request a minor adaptation is through MyAccount, and one of our friendly team members will get back to you as soon as possible with an answer.

However, if your needs are more complex or you’re not sure what kind of adaptation you might need, we might refer you to an occupational therapist for a needs assessment.

Major adaptations involve more significant work and include things like:

• stairlifts
• level-access showers
• through-floor lifts
• ramps

If you need a major adaptation in your home, first you’ll need to organise an assessment from an occupational therapist, which you can do by contacting your local council. They’ll send someone out to your home, usually an occupational therapist or a social care coordinator. They’ll work out what you need, and if you can get some financial support.

We don’t cover the cost of major adaptations, but you might qualify for a grant, usually a Disabled Facilities Grant.

You can apply for this from your council, which will look at your income and savings before deciding how much to give you.
Disabled Facilities Grants are offered by local councils to help people living with disabilities to modify their homes. 

They’re available to anyone with any kind of permanent disability, including mental illness and physical and learning disabilities.
The grant is managed and paid for by your local council and is only to be used for adaptations your local council has agreed you need.

There’s an upper limit on the amount you can get, but local councils may agree to top this up in some circumstances.
