How to report a mandatory occurrence

If you’ve spotted a safety occurrence in your home or building, also known as a mandatory occurrence, we want to know so we can take steps to put things right as quickly as possible.

What is a mandatory occurrence?

A safety occurrence or mandatory occurrence is a serious issue in a building that could put people at risk. These include structural failures or fire safety problems that, if not fixed, could lead to significant harm or even death.

 

Examples of safety occurrences:

 

  • Fire or smoke spreading through the building
  • Structural collapse or cracks
  • Failure of a critical fire safety measure, such as an automatic opening vent, smoke extraction, fire doors or smoke detectors
  • Dangerous or poor-quality building work
  • Unexpected failure of key materials

How to report a safety occurrence

Your building safety officer can help you with this if you need help. If you don't know who your officer us, call us on 0300 790 655 and ask for the Building Safety team or email us at building.safety@citizenhousing.org.uk.

 

Once we receive your report, we will

  • review it to see if it meets the criteria for a Mandatory Occurrence
  • let you know if it will be submitted to the Building Safety Regulator
  • give you a reference number if submitted
  • contact you if we need more information.

 

 

If we decide not to submit the notice, we’ll explain why. If you don’t agree, you can use our Building Safety complaints process, or contact the building Safety Regulator directly on 0300 790 6787 Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5pm (from 10am on Wednesdays).
