It’s National Apprenticeship Week!

This week is National Apprenticeship Week which brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make.

At Citizen we have colleagues who are currently apprentices gaining experience while learning on the job, as well as those who have completed their apprenticeships and worked their way up to their current role at Citizen.

Harry is currently working as an IT apprentice. He said he chose to do an apprenticeship as he felt it was the best way to gain experience.

He said: “An apprenticeship suited my learning style. I learn by seeing and doing, so having the mix of both college-based learning, and learning in the workplace really worked for me. I enjoy the work side more than the studying, which I didn’t expect!

“I have dedicated college days, but when I’m not in college I’m in the office three days a week. Most of my time is spent helping colleagues with IT issues, setting up new starters with their hardware, and ensuring that we have all equipment back from any leavers and their accounts have been disabled.

“My role is varied, and I have to think on my feet, however this means I’m always learning.”

Chelsea and Katy are two HR Advisors who worked their way up into their current roles following an apprenticeship.

Chelsea started as an apprentice with us 15 years ago. Her role was admin focused at first but over time she started supporting learning and development and HR.

She said: “A stand out moment in my apprenticeship was completing two NVQs in 12 months. It was a huge achievement, especially because I was only expected to complete one! But the biggest moment for me was securing a permanent role as an HR Administrator. That’s when I knew this was the right path for me.

“My apprenticeship gave me the experience and skills I needed to build my career, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

Katy joined us as a Business Administration Apprentice in 2011 then later moved to the HR team where she completed her apprenticeship.

She said: “I’m now a HR Advisor supporting the Repairs and Maintenance team. After my apprenticeship, I decided to continue developing my skills and went on to complete my CIPD qualification in 2019. I hadn’t considered HR before, but my apprenticeship gave me exposure to different areas, and I realised it was the right career for me.

“If you’re considering an apprenticeship, go for it! It’s a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, gain practical experience, and get a qualification.”

If you would like to take part in an apprenticeship at Citizen, keep an eye out for vacancies on our website.
