Working with partners to tackle persistent antisocial behaviour in Coventry this ASB Awareness Week
Date published: 03.07.26
It's ASB Awareness Week, which aims to raise awareness of antisocial behaviour (ASB) and the impact it can have on people's lives.
At Citizen, we want our customers to feel safe in their homes and communities. That's why we take reports of ASB seriously and work closely with partners to support those affected.
This week, we worked with our partners to evict a customer from a home in Torrington Avenue, Coventry, following a long-running case of serious antisocial behaviour that had a significant impact on neighbouring customers and the wider community.
The case began in 2023 after neighbours raised concerns about dog fouling in the communal garden and a lack of supervision of a pet.
Over time, further reports were received about excessive noise, poor property conditions, suspected illegal drug activity and behaviour that caused ongoing alarm and distress to those living nearby.
Throughout the case, our Neighbourhood Team worked closely with Coventry City Council's Noise and Environmental Protection teams, West Midlands Police and Children's Services to investigate concerns, support vulnerable individuals and take appropriate action.
We worked with the customer and partner agencies to try to address the issues and support the household.
Unfortunately, the problems continued and had an ongoing impact on neighbouring customers and the wider community.
Property inspections identified serious concerns about the condition of the home, leading to safeguarding referrals and ongoing involvement from Children's Services. Neighbours also continued to report excessive noise and antisocial behaviour. Coventry City Council served a Noise Abatement Notice, which was breached on multiple occasions.
As the situation continued, the council successfully prosecuted the customer for statutory noise nuisance and obtained a warrant, supported by police, to remove noise-making equipment from the property.
Reports of suspected drug activity and a serious incident involving individuals forcing entry into the property further highlighted the impact the situation was having on local residents.
Following legal action, we were granted possession of the property, and the eviction took place on Tuesday 1 July.
Our Director of Housing, Care and Support, Peter Gill, said: "We know how much cases like this can affect neighbouring customers, and I'd like to thank our Neighbourhood Teams and partner agencies for their persistence and professionalism in bringing this complex case to a conclusion.
“I’d also like to thank our customers and neighbours living nearby who reported the ASB to us and provided evidence – all of this helped us take action in this situation.
"Our priority is always to work with customers to resolve issues and help them sustain their tenancy wherever possible. However, when serious and persistent antisocial behaviour continues, despite repeated support and intervention, we will take action to protect our communities. Eviction is always a last resort, but in this case, it was the right outcome for local customers.
