Supported Housing Week is an opportunity to celebrate the difference supported housing makes to people’s lives.

At Citizen, we want our customers to feel safe, valued and supported to live as independently as possible.

For Service Manager Danielle Hudson, that means helping people make their own choices, build confidence and enjoy the things that matter most to them.

She said: “Supported living is not just about caring for someone, it’s about supporting them to live a life of their own”.

Helping Devon rediscover his independence

Danielle has seen first-hand how the right support can transform someone’s life.

Following a stroke, Devon had been living in a rehabilitation centre in Worcestershire, away from his family and friends in Birmingham.

Since moving to Sopwith Croft near the city, he’s been able to rebuild his confidence, regain his independence and reconnect with the people and places he loves.

With support when he needs it, Devon can now visit the shops, enjoy meals out, play pool and snooker with friends, and spend valuable time with his sister.

Danielle said: “The biggest change has been seeing Devon regain his independence, confidence and social life.

"He has more choice, freedom and control over his day-to-day life, while knowing that support is there when he needs it. It’s wonderful to see him enjoying life.”

Small steps make a big difference

Supported living is about finding the right balance between providing help and encouraging people to do things for themselves.

That might mean learning to cook, going shopping or making decisions about daily routines. For others, it’s about maintaining skills and having greater control over everyday choices.

A home where everyone has a voice

Getting to know each person is central to the support Danielle and her team provide. Through regular conversations, meetings and care plan reviews, they learn what matters to people and involve them in decisions about their lives and homes.

Colleagues also take time to understand how people communicate their wishes, including through gestures, facial expressions and body language.

As Danielle explains, supported living is about recognising that everyone is different and tailoring support to their individual needs, preferences and goals.

Ultimately, it’s about helping people feel at home, stay connected to the people they love and live life their way.
