Staying safe during hot weather
Date published: 24.06.26
With temperatures expected to be very high over the coming days, we're encouraging all customers to take extra care and stay safe during the hot weather.
While many people enjoy the sunshine, extreme heat can pose health risks, particularly for older people, young children, people with long-term health conditions and those who live alone.
Keep your home as cool as possible
To help prevent your home from overheating:
- Keep curtains, blinds and windows closed on sun-facing sides of your home during the hottest part of the day
- Open windows when the temperature cools down, particularly overnight if it is safe to do so
- Use fans if you have them and move to cooler rooms where possible
- Turn off lights and electrical devices when they are not needed, as these can generate extra heat.
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Water is the best option, and it's important to avoid becoming dehydrated during hot weather. Signs of dehydration can include feeling thirsty, dizzy, tired or having a headache.
Avoid the hottest part of the day
If possible:
- Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm when temperatures are at their highest
- Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours
- Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing
- Use sunscreen and wear a hat if you are spending time outdoors.
Look out for family, friends and neighbours
Hot weather can be especially difficult for people who are older, have health conditions or live alone.
A quick phone call, text message or visit can make a big difference. Check that they have enough water, are keeping cool and know where to get help if they need it.
Need support?
If you are worried about your health during the hot weather, contact your GP, NHS 111 or seek medical advice.
